Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, 22nd District) today has joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in their October breast cancer awareness campaign to urge women to get mammograms.
As part of these efforts, Senator Golden will host free mammography screenings in conjunction with the American Italian Cancer Foundation at both of his district offices. The mobile mammography van, staffed completely by women, will be outside of his office at 7408-5th Avenue on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and at his office located at 3604 Quentin Road on Friday, October 1, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. An appointment is necessary and can be made by calling 1-800-453-8378 extension 1.
Senator Golden stated, “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms. I hope that during the month of October, women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal. It is important to help provide for access to affordable health care and testing for our community. This free mammography unit is an example of my committment to ensuring this access is granted.”
For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program at 800-877-8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of who are women who have had breast cancer.
The hotline has been in existence for 30 years. It is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island. All services are free. The web site is: www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer.
