“It was once said that the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”
NY State Senator Neil Breslin echoed those words of Hubert Humphrey on December 29 as he accepted the NYAHSA Partners in Quality Award from the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we all woke up every morning and said that,” said Breslin, who is serving his seventh term representing the 46th Senate District.
He received the award from Daughters of Sarah residents Joe Meda and Arnold Heart, who both spoke passionately about the need to protect Medicaid from further cuts.
I would be very upset if people who come here after me didn’t have the same opportunities I have,” Meda said. “The arts and recreation – I would hate to see that disappear.”
Breslin acknowledged that even a smaller cut of 2 percent to Medicaid funding can shear off the activities and features that residents look forward to. “I’ll do everything in my power, but keep on me.” Breslin told residents, staff and guests. “We know there’s a crisis, but we have time to think about where to cut.
“If I’m ever embarrassed to come here. I’ll know we’ve done something wrong.”
