October 1, 2010

Senator Owen H. Johnson and Assemblyman Phil Boyle presented Luge Gold Medalist Aidan Kelly from Bay Shore with a New York State Legislative Citation honoring his outstanding achievements.    This past year, Aidan raced his way to a Gold Medal in the Adirondack Ice Breaker in Lake Placid.  Aidan is currently ranked #3 in the United States among youth luge athletes, which catapulted Aidan to the “C” team, known as the Candidate team.  Being named to a USA Luge team is a unique honor and experience for only a select few.  Only athletes with the talent, desire and work ethic necessary to excel in luge in the future are selected to the team.

“I am proud to recognize and honor Aidan Kelly for his achievements,” Senator Owen H. Johnson said.  “Aidan’s achievements make him a fine example of dedication and perseverance and a credit to his parents, team, and community.”

Aidan’s journey; began three years ago at the age of 12, at Bald Hill in Farmingville, NY.  Aidan completed the slalom course on a wheeled sled.  Five months later, Aidan received an invitation to attend a screening camp in Lake Placid, NY.  He did well on the Olympic ice and was asked to be a member of the US National Junior Luge Development team later that year, becoming a member of the “D” team.  As a member of the “D” Team, Aidan traveled to the US Olympic track in Salt Lake City and competed in the Youth National Championships.
