Dear Friend:
This year, our annual beach cleanup is scheduled for September 25, 2010 at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10:00 am until noon. I hope that you will be able to participate so that we can make Beach Cleanup 2010 another big success.
Last year, results showed that over 400 volunteers removed more than 1,700 pounds of debris from our shoreline.
The data we collect is compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it is analyzed and compared with data from around the world. The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe. It is also used by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place.
The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region will cosponsor the event. In addition, numerous conservation organizations, sportsmen’s groups, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops from our area are expected to participate.
If you have any questions about Beach Cleanup Day, please contact my office at (631)669-9200. I encourage you to download (below) and complete a printed copy of the Volunteer Service Form to bring along with you on Beach Cleanup Day. Advance registration is not required, however, with a completed Volunteer Service Form in hand upon your arrival, registration will be quick and easy.
Please remember to bring gloves and sunscreen and wear comfortable walking shoes. To those who have participated in the past, I look forward to seeing you again. I also hope to meet many new volunteers this year.
With best personal regards, I remain
Very truly yours,
