Senator Owen Johnson Honors Urban League of Long Island and President Theresa Sanders

Senator Owen Johnson recently presented the Urban League of Long Island, and Theresa E. Sanders, President & CEO of the Urban League of Long Island with Legislative Resolutions honoring the occasion of receiving the Empowerment Award from the Department of Human Services in the Town of Babylon.

Founded in 1972, The Urban League of Long Island, Inc. is one of over 100 affiliates of the National Urban League, the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement empowering African-Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream.  The mission of the Urban League of Long Island and the overall Urban League Movement is to “empower African-Americans and other disenfranchised individuals to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights.”

The Urban League is a not-for-profit organization that annually serves over 20,000 children and families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.  The clients of the Urban League come from highly diversified backgrounds and possess a myriad of needs including at-risk youth, mature workers, the unemployed, local businesses, and spiritual/faith based communities among others.
