New York State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz Celebrates El Diario la Prensa’s Editorial
New York State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz (D-Bronx) is deeply honored to receive the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Recognition from the Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee, despite El Diario la Prensa’s recent editorial disappointment in this selection.
In response to El Diario la Prensa’s editorial that appeared in their Saturday, May 22 edition,Senator Reverend Diaz issued the following statement:
“It is a great privilege to be recognized by this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee with the Lifetime Achievement Award. I deeply appreciate the Parade Committee’s acknowledgment of my work and my commitment to defending the rights of Puerto Ricans.
El Diario la Prensa opposes the Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee’s selection of me for this honor solely because I oppose gay marriage, ignoring that 60% of residents of New York State support my position by opposing gay marriage.
I must thank El Diario la Prensa for their Saturday editorial recognizing that I remain firm in my convictions to oppose gay marriage. I wear this badge proudly.
I thank El Diario la Prensa for their Saturday editorial that will serve as further testimony to all of my fellow evangelical ministers and to all people who promote and respect traditional family values. El Diario la Presnsa’s editorial from May 22, 2010 confirms that I am not a person who bends.
El Diario la Prensa’s editorial insists that “All parades should send the best, positive messages”. I totally agree. The countless messages of congratulations in person, by phone, and even on my facebook page from elected officials, community leaders, constituents and supporters for the tremendous honor of being recognized by the Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee agree as well.”
