SENATOR DIAZ CALLS ON THE MAYOR TO DO
“THE RIGHT THING” FOR THE SCHOOLS IN HIS SENATORIAL DISTRICT
Bronx, NY- State Senator Ruben Diaz announced that tomorrow the New York State Department of Education will release the names of the City’s failing schools.
Among them, Samuel Gompers High School, Banana Kelly High School, Bronx Academy High School, James Monroe High School, Christopher Columbus High School, School for Community Research and Learning, and Monroe Academy for Business and Law, which are in the 32nd Senatorial District, which he represents.
According to Federal and State rules these schools qualify for immediate federal assistance if the Mayor of the City of New York wishes to do so. Each one of these schools qualifies for $2 million per year for the next three years, a total of $6 million per school. Instead of phasing out these schools, the Mayor and the Department of Education should allow them to obtain this assistance and help them stay open.
“It is important that the Mayor and the Department of Education move immediately to protect the children of this community” stated Senator Diaz. “Our children are waiting for our city’s leaders to do the right thing,” he concluded.
