Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz Applauds Selection of Rafael Piñero to
Highest Rank in NYPD History
Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz, Chairman of the New York State Senate Puerto Rican and Latino Caucus, commended Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly on the selection of Chief of Personnel Rafael Piñero as his First Deputy Commissioner. “Pinero’s selection is historical. We have never had a Hispanic at such a top level in the administration of the New York Police Department. Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly chose the best candidate and I congratulate them both!,” stated Díaz.
Piñero is a career officer that has worked his way up the ranks of the NYPD. “Piñero knows the department, the officers know him, and he is the consummate professional,” he further stated. Latinos are already the largest minority group in the City of New York, and their numbers are growing exponentially because of their young age.
“Commissioner Piñero’s presence at that high ranking level will provide the NYPD with a knowledgeable individual that will be sensitive to this growing community in need of access and understanding. This was a job well done by all!,” concluded Senator Díaz.
