Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz, Sr. to Celebrate
Senior Citizens Day and Senior Citizen of the Year

Albany, NY- State Senator Rubén Díaz, Sr., Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aging will celebrate Senior Citizens Day 2010 on Wednesday, May 5 with a legislative resolution on the floor of the Senate memorializing Governor David A. Paterson, to proclaim May 2010 as "Senior Citizens Month" in the State of New York. Additionally, as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aging, Senator Díaz had the honor of choosing this year’s Senior Citizen of the Year. Nominees from throughout New York State will gather for a celebration in the Convention Center from noon until 3:00 p.m.

“It is an honor and a privilege for me as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aging, to once again celebrate Senior Citizens Day,” Senator Díaz remarked. I was truly amazed by the dedication, expertise, and contributions made by this year’s nominees for Senior Citizen of the Year. It was a very difficult decision to choose only one honoree from among so many outstanding candidates,” he continued.

The recipient of the 2010 Senior Citizen of the Year Award is Mrs. Dorothy Austin, a resident of  Watertown, New York.  Mrs. Austin was nominated by the Jefferson County Office for the Aging for her many contributions as treasurer, vice president and president of the Brownville Glen Park Senior Citizens.  Mrs. Austin’s many other volunteer activities include Meals on Wheels, Office for the Aging Health Fair Volunteer and weekly visits to the Samaritan Keep Home.  Mrs. Austin celebrated her 74th birthday on May 2, 2010.  She will be honored with a Senate Resolution during the Senate session on Wednesday, May 5th.

“Mrs. Austin’s service to her community has earned her the respect and honor of her peers, and I am pleased to acknowledge her with New York State’s Senior Citizen of the Year Award,” Senator Díaz concluded.
