Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) cautions all individuals and families that a sales tax hike will soon take effect. On October 1st, New York State will begin collecting 4 percent sales tax on clothing and footwear costing $110 or less as part of the 2010-2011 state budget approved by the Democrats who now control state government.
“I voted against this budget in large part because of the tax and fee increases,” said Senator Saland. “The state government needs to tighten its belt. This sales tax increase only inflicts more fiscal pain on hard-pressed families who are struggling to make ends meet in this tough economy.”
The sales tax reinstatement is expected to cost New Yorkers $330 million. It was included in nearly $4 billion in new taxes approved this year so the state’s Democratic leadership could continue to spend.
“To expect more from taxpayers during a recession is just wrong. This tax increase will hurt families and businesses alike and will only further contribute to the state’s fiscal problems,” said Saland. “Taxpayers have had enough; businesses continue to close their doors; and the state’s current leadership has once again failed to control their appetite for more spending.”
Items that were formerly exempt from state sales tax that will now be subject to the 4 percent tax that state Democrats approved as part of this year's tax-and-spend budget include such items as; dresses, uniforms, sleepwear, coats, hats, Scout uniforms, socks and even diapers.
