Statement from Senator Morahan on the Haitian Relief Effort

“As the immediate relief efforts are underway and ongoing in Haiti, it is my understanding that the Governor has instructed New York State to work with our federal officials and local officials on the ground to identify resource needs. Even as our resources are mobilized as quickly as possible, it will take hours -- and in many cases days -- to get all of our first-responders and resources on the ground in a safe and orderly manner. It is my understanding that the roads in Haiti are impassable, the seaports are severely damaged, information that comes in is sporadic, and aftershocks continue. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Haitian community overseas and here in Rockland County during this difficult time. The losses that have been suffered in Haiti are devastating and I am deeply saddened by the aftermath.”

“At this time, several nonprofit organization are accepting monetary donations for relief efforts. Some of these organizations and information on how to donate can be found below. I want to thank the many New Yorkers, especially those here in my district in the Town of Ramapo, Village of Spring Valley and the students at SUNY Rockland, who have already contributed to this effort. In the days ahead, my office will continue to work with those individuals and organizations who want to assist in this effort. I encourage anyone who could donate to the humanitarian relief efforts to do so at this time.”

To donate by text: “HAITI” to “90999” and a donation of $10.00 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.

The State Department has set up a toll-free number for information about loved ones in Haiti. The toll-free number is 1-888-407-4747, and there may be a wait or delay due to heavy call volume.

Also, New York State is in the process of creating an online registry to gather the names of New Yorkers in Haiti during the time of the earthquake.  The registry is on the Governor's website.  The hotline is 1-888-769-7243.  It's staffed from 9am to 9pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends.
