Senator Espaillat has been advocating to include Rent Regulations in the budget since being tapped as Ranking Democrat on Housing CommitteeToday, Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) praised Governor Andrew Cuomo for calling on rent regulations – including rent control – to be included in the state budget. Senator Espaillat has been advocating for the inclusion of rent regulations in the budget since being selected as the top Democratic (ranking) member on the Senate Housing Committee.

“I am thrilled that Governor Cuomo recognizes the importance of including rent regulations in this year’s budget,” said Senator Adriano Espaillat. “Over 1 million families in New York – including 79, 000 in my district – would be squeezed out of their homes if rent regulations are allowed to expire on June 15th. We simply cannot afford to let this issue go down to the wire and must address the extension and strengthening of rent regulations now. That’s why we have fought so hard to include rent regulations in the budget and why we are grateful the Governor has heeded our call.”

This past Tuesday, Senator Espaillat debated Republicans on the Senate floor, calling on rent regulations to be included in the budget. On February 24th, Senator Espaillat led a rally of Senate Democrats, tenant advocates, and NYC elected officials advocating for passing rent regulations as part of the budget.

As the top Democratic (ranking) member on the Senate Housing Committee, Senator Espaillat has sponsored legislation (S. 2783A) which strengthens and extends rent regulations.
