Nepperhan Community Center Honors Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

(Westchester, NY)- Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District- D/I/WF) was honored this morning by the Nepperhan Community Center at their 25th Silver Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast with the Drum Major for Justice Award. The Senator joined Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow, Westchester County Board Chairman Ken Jenkins, and Yonkers City Councilwoman Pat McDow as honorees at the annual celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Community Center.
“It is a pleasure to celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with my colleagues in government and my friends at the Nepperhan Community Center,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “I am honored to receive this award, and I would like to congratulate Assemblyman Pretlow, Chairman Jenkins and Councilwoman McDow on their awards as well.”
Throughout her tenure as State Senator, Andrea Stewart- Cousins has provided funding and support to many of the Nepperhan Community Center’s programs and initiatives. She has supported a number of sporting activities for youth including basketball, girls softball, cheerleading, and youth tackle football. She also secured funding for a Summer Jobs for Youth Program, a Transition and Re-Entry Program as well as a computer and technology room at the center.
“The Nepperhan Community Center is a staple in our community, and I am proud to support all of the work that they do for our youth and senior citizens.” commented the Senator.
Following the breakfast, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the African American Men of Westchester at their 9th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Youth Awards Luncheon. She then headed to the Afya Foundation’s Open House Volunteer Day, where volunteers packed medical equipment for shipment to Haiti.
“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is one of service, peace and unity. On this day, where we remember Dr. King, and all that he stood for, we are reminded of our obligation to serve our communities in the best ways that we can.” said Senator Stewart-Cousins.
