Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Transportation Committee has approved Governor Cuomo’s nominee for Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Barbara Fiala.
The Committee approved Ms. Fiala’s nomination following a hearing to examine her qualifications and professional experience.
“Barbara Fiala is an excellent nominee to head the DMV. Her many years of experience managing local DMV operations, along with her years of executive experience, make her well qualified to be the next DMV Commissioner. I am hopeful that she will soon be confirmed by the full Senate,” said Senator Fuschillo.
Ms. Fiala brings years of professional and administrative experience to her new position. She is extremely familiar with DMV operations, having served as DMV Supervisor and Deputy County Clerk for Broome County in upstate New York from 1981-1997. As County Clerk, a position she held from 1997-2004, she was responsible for overseeing all DMV operations in Broome County. In addition to her knowledge and dealings with DMV issues, Ms. Fiala possesses executive experience, having served as Broome County Executive from 2005 until 2011.
Ms. Fiala also holds degrees from Broome County Community College and Binghamton University.
Ms. Fiala's nomination now goes before the Senate Finance Committee, and if approved, will be moved to a vote in the full Senate.
