Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited Calhoun High School to congratulate senior Jenny Wu for being named a national semifinalist in both the 2011 Intel Science Talent Search and the Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition.
“Earning national recognition in just one of these competitions is an incredible accomplishment; to do it in both, as Jenny did, is very special. It’s wonderful to see Jenny rewarded for her many hours of hard work, research, and study under the guidance of her teachers by being named one of the country’s best young scientists. I am pleased to congratulate this incredible student and wish her all the best in the future,” said Senator Fuschillo.
The Intel Science Talent Search is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Participants come from all across the country, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands to compete in the program. Jenny was one of only 300 students nationwide selected as semi-finalists.
The Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition was launched in 1998 to recognize America’s best and brightest math and science students. Jenny was named one of 312 national semifinalists out of entries from all across the country.
In addition to being named an Intel and Siemens semifinalist, Jenny is involved in a number of extracurricular activities, including the student council, tennis team, track team, science club, math club, and Latin club. She is also the Salutatorian of Calhoun’s Class of 2011.
Senator Fuschillo also presented Jenny with copies of two legislative resolutions he sponsored, which were passed by the State Senate, honoring her accomplishments. With passage of the resolutions, Jenny’s name and achievements will forever be part of the New York State Senate’s official record.
