With families getting ready to start their back to school shopping, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is reminding residents that clothing and footwear purchases under $55 per item are now exempt from the New York State portion of sales tax.
“This state sales tax exemption puts money back into the pockets of hard-working families. At a time when many household budgets are stretched thin, residents are looking to save money anyway they can. This exemption will produce savings for families and help them keep more of their hard earned money,” said Senator Fuschillo.
The 4% state portion of the sales tax was eliminated as part of this year’s state budget. In addition, the 3/8 % MTA portion of the sales tax was also eliminated. The exemption applies to sales of clothing and footwear which cost less than $55 per item (or per pair for footwear). Senator Fuschillo strongly supported this tax cut for families.
Residents who have questions about the state sales tax exemption can call Senator Fuschillo’s office at 516-882-0630.
