Senator Fuschillo Statement on Need for Teen Indoor Tanning Ban

“Earlier today, I joined with the American Cancer Society, representatives from advocacy groups, medical experts, and individuals who have been victimized by skin cancer in calling for a new law to protect children from skin cancer and other dangers associated with indoor tanning. The legislation, which I am sponsoring along with Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, would prohibit children under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices. 

As adults, we have a responsibility to protect children from engaging in behavior we know could cause them serious harm. No parent I know wants their child doing something that will increase his or her chances of getting cancer by 75 percent; according to the American Cancer Society, research by the International Agency for Research on Cancer shows that’s exactly what indoor tanning does.  

Stories of former indoor tanning users who are now currently affected by cancer are all too common. Medical experts have repeatedly warned about the potential dangers associated with indoor tanning. Despite the warnings, many teens are putting themselves at risk for health problems which are completely preventable.  

Far too many people who used indoor tanning devices as teenagers are now battling skin cancer. Many more have sadly lost their fight. It’s time for New York State to pass this law and protect children from potentially harming themselves in a way that they will regret later in life.”
