Squadron Calls on Doe to Reform Rezoning Process

CITES CONTINUED NEED IN LOWER MANHATTAN: SUGGESTS ADDITIONAL CLASSROOMS AT TWEED

NEW YORK -- Following the Community Education Council District 2 resolution opposing the Department of Education's revised zoning proposal, State Senator Daniel Squadron reiterated his concerns with the District 2 plan and called on the DOE to reform the student population projections it uses for rezoning.

In a letter sent to Chancellor Dennis Walcott today, Senator Squadron urges the DOE to work with CEC2 to prepare a new proposal. Senator Squadron encourages the DOE to consider using the Tweed Courthouse to meet the growing demand for school seats in Lower Manhattan if no other buildings become available, moving offices to another nearby facility (such as Tower 4 of the World Trade Center).

"The revised zoning proposal poses a significant challenge to the CEC and the community," wrote Senator Squadron. "Insufficient data makes hard decisions about the future of our community schools that much more difficult. I urge you to work closely with CEC2 in the preparation of a zoning proposal that reduces waitlists and creates a new zone for the Peck Slip School."
