In an effort to celebrate Rockland County’s cherished cultural diversity, Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today visited Fleetwood Elementary School to present a certificate of achievement to third grader Brianna Torres-Vega, one of the winners for his first annual Hispanic Heritage Month Poster Contest.
The contest drew 144 student entries from six elementary schools that participated in the month-long competition, with a total of six winners altogether.
“We all should feel a sense of pride when it comes to embracing each of our cultures,” said Senator Carlucci. “Events such as this one hopefully reaffirms our belief that we can be creative and share in our diversity while at the same time working together to make our communities a better place for us to live.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to American society and culture. The month-long celebration began September 15 and continued through October 15. This year's theme was Many Backgrounds, Many Stories, One American Spirit.
Students were encouraged to share their designs with their school classroom and art teachers while educators would encourage participation.
Guidelines for participating included ensuring that posters be no larger than 11” x 14”, a limit of one entry per student be accepted, and an informational sheet filled out and sent back to the senator’s office.
Senator Carlucci continues to personally deliver each award recipient's certificate to their school.
