Senator Eric Adams, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, Councilmember Letitia James and Councilmember Jumaane Williams call on Mayor Bloomberg to appoint Commission to Investigate Systemic Corruption in the NYPD

On Tuesday, November 3, Senator Eric Adams, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, Councilmember Letitia James and Councilmember Jumaane Williams call on Mayor Bloomberg to appoint an independent commission to investigate systemic corruption in the NYPD.

Senator Adams' statement:

"In response to the alleged accusations of corruption within the New York City Police Department, I strongly urge Mayor Bloomberg to establish an independent commission to provide an unbiased, objective oversight of the actions of the NYPD.  As a former NYPD captain, I understand the importance of the citizenry having confidence and respect in the law enforcement agency entrusted to protect them. As a State Senator, I recognize the importance of a 'checks-and-balances' system for any organization that has the power to impact the lives of others. 

In light of the recent police scandals, it is imperative that a commission be created so that the integrity of the New York City Police Department can be restored. I enjoin Mayor Bloomberg to follow the path of his predecessors, who created the Knapp and Mollen Commissions to address alleged police corruption within NYC. The establishment of a commission is a 'win-win' for all. It will restore the faith of the general public in the NYPD and will afford the thousands of stellar police personnel to hold their heads high."
