Olcott Beach land transfer OK'd by Legislature

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) and Assemblyman John Ceretto (R-I, Lewiston) are pleased to announce that the State Legislature approved a bill (S.4253-B/A.6855-B) to allow the ownership of the beachfront and terraced recreational area at Olcott Beach to be conveyed from Niagara County to the Town of Newfane.  Both local governments are seeking state approval for the transfer to ensure the summer operation and maintenance of Olcott Beach for the enjoyment of local residents.

“This action is a way to help make sure that lifeguards are on duty at Olcott Beach to keep the beach open, clean, and safe during the summer,” Senator Maziarz said.  “In the past, the beach had to be closed unnecessarily when staffing wasn’t in place.”

Assemblyman Ceretto said, “In today’s tough economic times, state and local governments need to optimize their resources to provide important services for the community.  By allowing the county to transfer land to the Town of Newfane we are helping to ensure that Olcott Beach continues to provide enjoyment and relaxation to local residents in a safe environment.”

Niagara County Legislator John Syracuse (R-C-I, Newfane) said, “This is the positive result of three levels of government working together for the common good.  The waterfront area at Olcott Beach is a great draw for tourists, and this land transfer is the best way to maintain and operate it.”

“I would like to thank Senator Maziarz and Assemblyman Ceretto for their leadership on the passage of this bill,” said Town Supervisor Tim Horanburg.  “A clean an open beach is an important part of bringing tourists to Olcott and the Town of Newfane.”

Under the Town of Newfane’s control, the parklands will remain open to the public.  Swimming hours at the beach will be from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. until Labor Day.

Until Governor Andrew Cuomo signs the legislation into law and the land transfer is finalized, the Town will lease the property in question from the County and manage it.  The one-year lease has already been approved by town and county officials.

The zero-cost land transfer in question does not include other areas of Krull Park, such as the picnic pavilions, sports fields, playground areas.

The measure will be sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo.
