Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) today announced that beginning on April 1, the State of New York will once again exempt its share of sales tax (4%) on clothing and shoes. This exemption will apply to items under $55 in value until April 1, 2012, when it will apply to clothing and shoes under $110.
A majority of lawmakers lifted the clothing tax exemption last fall to help close the state's budget gap, a move that Senator Maziarz opposed.
“I voted against the temporary suspension of the sales tax exemption when it took effect last fall,” said Senator Maziarz. “This action was nothing more than a gimmick to get more tax revenue into the state’s coffers.”
Senator Maziarz noted the importance of ensuring that the hardworking men and women of New York get the tax relief they deserve.
“I don’t think we should be playing games when it comes to New Yorkers’ ability to buy necessary items like clothing and shoes,” stated Senator Maziarz. “Our families deserve better, and I’m glad the sales tax holiday is coming back on April 1.”
