State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) is pleased to announce Governor Cuomo signed legislation into law on August 4th that updates and improves the process for reviewing and siting electric generating facilities in New York State.
"This new law should help ensure that we have a reliable and adequate supply of electricity, which is generated by cleaner and more efficient facilities," said Senator Farley. "This is especially important to help promote economic development and jobs within the State."
The main components of the legislation include reauthorizing and modernizing the licensing process for major electric generating facilities, making it easier for consumers and businesses to undertake energy efficiency investments, and exploring the potential for additional solar power generation in the state.
"One concern many businesses have about New York is the ‘red-tape’ and the hurdles which have delayed needed projects," Senator Farley said. "This legislation helps streamline the process while allowing communities to participate in the process more. It also encourages energy efficiency. This bill is a ‘win-win’ for those involved and certainly helps New York State."
There was broad support among both the business community and environmental groups for The Power NY Act of 2011. Organizations include Unshackle Upstate, the Business Council of New York State, Independent Power Producers of New York, National Federation of Independent Business, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, New York State Building and Construction Trades Council, the New York League of Conservation Voters, Environmental Advocates, the New York Public Interest Research Group, and the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance.
