Senator Jack M. Martins challenged his Nassau County Senate colleagues, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Senator Chuck Fuschillo, this morning to a lunch bet that will be settled by which Nassau County School wins the Nassau County Boy’s Varsity Class AA Basketball Championship this Saturday at Hofstra University’s Mack Center. The bet centers around which team takes home the Nassau County Championship Crown- the Elmont Spartans or the Baldwin Bruins.

The contest has all three Senators cheering on their teams from their respective districts. Senator Martins represents the Elmont Spartan team while Senator Fuschillo represents the Baldwin Bruins. Senator Dean Skelos, who represents both communities in the Senate, wants for both teams to “play hard and play to win.”

“I’ll be rooting for my friend, Spartan senior Dillon Williams, and the entire Elmont Spartan squad,” said Senator Martins. "The Bruins are going down.”

Williams was honored by Senator Martins just a few weeks ago at the Elmont Black History Month celebration with the 7th Senate District Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for character and leadership.

The bet between the three Senators entails the following: if the Elmont Spartans win the game, Senator Fuschillo will eat lunch at the Elmont Memorial High School cafeteria with members of the Spartan squad, Martins and Skelos. If Baldwin wins, Martins will travel to Baldwin and eat with the Bruins, Fuschillo and Skelos.

Senator Skelos said, “Both teams are outstanding and will do their very best. I’m very lucky to represent both communities.”

Elmont Memorial High School Principal John Capozzi said, “Senator Martins is going to win this bet. We will have the cafeteria ready for Senator Fuschillo and Senator Skelos.”

"Regardless of who wins this bet, both schools should be very proud of these young men and all three of us will be dropping by to congratulate them on a job well done," Senator Martins said. "But I have a feeling the Spartans are bringing the 'W' home."
