A new sports lounge had their official opening in Elmont this past week where community members were invited to cut the ribbon at "Magnet" Sports and Entertainment Lounge. The opening was attended by community leaders and family members of owners Michael Mullings, Roger Williams and Barry White. State Senator Jack Martins was invited to the opening in commemoration of his support of the new business and revitalization efforts in the Elmont community.
During the ribbon cutting, Senator Martins congratulated the owners and wished them success of their new business. "Mike, Roger and Barry have worked very hard on the opening of Magnet and I couldn't be more proud and honored to be a part of this special day with them. Months ago, they asked me for some help in navigating State government so that they could be ready for this big day. I'm glad I was able to help and celebrate this day with them," said Martins.
The celebration was attended by over 200 at the lounge. During the program, community members were recognized for their contributions to the day. Elmont Coalition Chair Sandra Smith, Elmont.org Owner Aubrey Phillips, former Elmont School Board President Pamela Byer, former Elmont Library Board President Tania Lawes and community Liaison Marvin Lee to Senator Dean Skelos were recognized for their help and support in opening the lounge.
"Everything you see here in Magnet was constructed by Mike, Roger, Barry and all their friends. The craftsmanship is outstanding and the atmosphere in Magnet lends itself to being a great place for the community to come watch a game and have fun," said Senator Martins adding, "businesses like Magnet who care about the community, take part in it and create jobs are what it's all about."
One of the celebrants at the opening was Dillon Williams, son of owner Roger Williams, a member of the Nassau County Championship Elmont Boys Basketball team. Williams said, "I'm really proud of my dad. This was his dream with Mike and Barry. Tonight is the beginning of a bright future for them, Magnet and Elmont."
Elmont Coalition Chair Sandra Smith noted, "it's so nice to see such a classy establishment find its home in Elmont. Magnet is fast becoming a hot spot for community members!"
During the program Mullings, Williams and White reflected on their work in opening Magnet. "Magnet is more than a lounge. For us it was a dream and creating a place that people will want to come to, have fun and enjoy themselves. Tonight, it looks like we have done just that," said White.
