Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Nicholas Center for Autism and Spectrum Designs Foundation in Port Washington and met with co-founder Stella Spanakos and director of development Nicole Sugrue to congratulate them on the opening of the center, which offers educational workshops and vocational training.
“I applaud the efforts of the Spectrum Designs Foundation and Nicholas Center for Autism. There are many families that are affected by Autism and dedicated educators ensure that those who fall within the spectrum receive the quality attention they deserve,” Senator Martins said.
New York State passed landmark Autism legislation that was signed into law by the Governor. The new law, which will go in 2012. The legislation requires insurance companies to provide coverage for the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of Autism spectrum disorders, including behavioral health treatments, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Insurance companies are prohibited from terminating coverage or refusing to renew, adjust, amend, issue, or execute a policy solely because the individual has been diagnosed with or received treatment for autism spectrum disorders.
