Senator Martins Reads to Students at the Manorhaven School

New York State Senator Jack M. Martins (R-C-I, Mineola) recently visited the Manorhaven Elementary School in the Port Washington School District to participate in the Manorhaven Read Aloud 2011.

Senator Martins read, “Testing the Ice” by Sharon Robinson to the students and also met with Port Washington Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoffrey N. Gordon.

“Testing the Ice” is a book about the life of baseball great Jackie Robinson, written by his daughter Sharon. Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He faced adversity and displayed courage in overcoming the challenges he faced and paved the way for the integration of Major League Baseball, showing that baseball should not be segregated.

Senator Martins is a big baseball fan and being familiar with Jackie Robinson’s story, enjoyed sharing it with the students. “It was an absolute pleasure to read to the students at the Manorhaven Elementary School. After facing difficult challenges in Albany, it’s always a thrill to visit the schools in the 7th Senate District. Manorhaven is a wonderful school in an exceptional school district,” Senator Martins said.

Senator Martins was welcomed at the Manorhaven Elementary School by school Librarian Maryellen Noone, who thanked the Senator and invited him back to the school during the week of February 7 to 11 for the Cultural Studies Program when the school will be transformed into the country of Ireland.
