Senator Martins Tours Port Washington, Meets With Community Leaders

Senator Jack M. Martins, the chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Local Government, recently spent a Friday in Port Washington meeting with community leaders and listening to their concerns.

Senator Martins started the day by meeting with Village of Port Washington North Mayor Robert Weitzner. Among the topics discussed was the Port Washington North Baywalk Project, which consists of 1.7 acres of waterfront property. The village’s goal is to transform the area into an active waterfront park so that the area becomes a destination for residents.

Phase I has been completed on the project.

“I want to commend the Village of Port Washington North for their efforts on the Baywalk project. I enjoyed discussing the project with Mayor Weitzner. The village residents and elected officials have a clear vision for what they want to see for the area. I was very impressed with the project,” said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins then met with members of Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington. Executive Director Mindy Germain, Director of Development Marianne Dalimonte and Andrea Majer took Senator Martins on a bus tour of the Port Washington area, which began at the Port Washington Library.

Senator Martins got a first-hand look at the Baywalk Project, the Baxter’s Pond Park, Sheets Creek and Sunset Park, where movies are shown outdoors during the summer. Senator Martins then stopped in to see the Landmark on Main Street, which promotes opportunities for cultural, educational, recreational, social and civic activities for the benefit of the people of Port Washington and neighboring communities.

After the tour, it was back to the library, where Senator Martins met with community leaders in a town-hall forum. The Senator answered numerous questions about the state’s financial situation, funding, grants, the MTA and efforts to beautify the Port Washington downtown.

“Port Washington is a beautiful community and it has become the community it is because it has residents who care. I am looking forward to working with them in the months ahead on their efforts. They have done a tremendous job,” Senator Martins said.
