Mohawk Infrastructure Improvements Complete
James L. Seward
April 15, 2011
MOHAWK, 04/14/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined Village of Mohawk Mayor Irene Sweet to announce the recent completion of the Minnow Brook culvert repair project. The project was funded through a $400,000 Multi Modal grant previously secured by Senator Seward.
“Local infrastructure is critical to the well-being of families and individuals as well as future economic growth,” said Senator Seward. “Often times, however, repair costs are just too much for a small rural municipality to afford. I was pleased to step in and help secure funding to protect public safety and the bottom line for those who live and work in the Village of Mohawk.”
In May 2006, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) informed the Village of Mohawk that the Minnow Brook culvert was in need of extensive repairs. The June 2006 flood further damaged the culvert. Shortly after receiving repair recommendations developed by the NYSDOT Structures Unit in September 2008, Senator Seward secured a $400,000 Multi Modal grant for the project.
“Senator Seward’s prompt attention to this issue saved local taxpayers from a substantial expense,” said Village of Mohawk Mayor Irene Sweet. “We certainly appreciate his active involvement.”
“We are happy to have been able to provide technical assistance to the Village of Mohawk for this culvert repair project, and appreciate the opportunity to help the village access the Multi Modal grant secured by Senator Seward, ” said NYSDOT Regional Director Michael A. Shamma, P.E.
The culvert was designed by Barton and Loguidice, P.C. of Syracuse, New York and constructed by Jablonski Excavating Inc. of St. Johnsville, New York. Construction work was completed in September 2010. The village requested the final reimbursement payment for the project in March 2011.
