This year’s theme for National Fire Prevention Week is “Protect Your Family From Fire.” As a proud grandfather of eight, I know how important it is to follow the advice of fire safety experts. I always check the working order of my home’s smoke detectors, minimize the use of potential fire hazards, such as candles, and I like to plan and practice a fire escape route with my family. Simple steps like these can help save lives.
Sadly, every year numerous fires devastate homes, businesses and families throughout Central New York. My thoughts are always with the victims as they try and recover. I also commend all of the brave firefighters, who work daily to protect the lives and properties of residents in my district.
So as we mark National Fire Prevention Week, please take some time to visit the National Fire Protection Association’s website at www.nfpa.org to learn how to prevent house fires. In addition, you can access important safety tips from the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York by logging onto www.fasny.com. Several local fire departments will also be holding events and open houses during Fire Prevention Week, which I encourage you to attend.
Once again, please make sure to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. And remember, Amanda’s Law, which took effect last year, mandates that there be working carbon monoxide detectors in all New York homes.
