Senator Defrancisco’s Bill to Amend Property Tax Installment Payments Becomes Law
John A. DeFrancisco
September 29, 2011
Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-I-C, Syracuse) announced that his bill (S3110), which authorizes local school boards to determine the amount of an installment payment for school taxes, has become law.
“The amended law gives local school boards the authority to pass a resolution allowing the receiver of taxes in a municipality to accept payments smaller than 50 percent of the tax bill as a first payment, instead of turning them away,” said Senator DeFrancisco. The previous law required that at least 50 percent of the total tax bill be paid in the first installment, and the entire tax bill had to be paid in three installments.
“High property taxes and the economic crisis make it very difficult for some citizens to make ends meet, but they should not be denied a good-faith effort to pay their tax bill. This law will help to ease the burden on taxpayers, and help to bring in tax revenue for the schools sooner,” said Senator DeFrancisco.
“Sharon Edick, the Town of Cicero Receiver of Taxes and an advocate of this bill, says that it will help citizens with cash flow problems by giving them a more manageable option to meeting their tax obligations,” said Senator DeFrancisco. The law is effective immediately.
