Applied Sciences Campus on Roosevelt Island

(New York, NY)- State Senator José M. Serrano  joined Mayor R. Bloomberg, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Member Jessica Lapin, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, New York City Economic Development President Seth W. Pinsky, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology President Peretz Lavie  to announce that Cornell University and the Technion Institute of Israel have been chosen to build an Applied Sciences and Engineering campus on Roosevelt Island.

Cornell University and the Technion Institute of Israel have been selected as part of The Applied Sciences NYC initiative, which intends to revive the city’s economy through the applied sciences.

“It’s very exciting that Roosevelt Island will host a state-of-the-art applied sciences campus in New York City, and I congratulate Cornell University on their winning bid,” said Senator Serrano. “This represents an amazing opportunity not only for Roosevelt Island, but for the entire City and State. Our City’s greatest strength is our diversity and we have always attracted a wealth of talent from all over the globe.”

The Senator continued: “The Island’s accessibility to the heart of Manhattan makes it the ideal location for a new facility of higher learning. We have a tremendous talent pool to draw upon from within our communities, and I look forward to the educational opportunities and economic activity this campus will generate. The Roosevelt Island residents, who have been extremely supportive throughout this process, are sure to make wonderful neighbors, and together we look forward to working with Cornell University to ensure the success of this campus.”
