September 20, 2011
The Bronx Chamber of Commerce hosted their Hispanic Heritage Month Leadership Luncheon and honored Senator Serrano with theLeadership Award for being an exemplary member of the Hispanic community.
"I'm extremely honored to be presented with this award," said Senator Serrano. "Hispanics are a growing demographic in the United States and make up the 15th largest consumer economy in the world. Despite the recent economic downturn, it is evident that Hispanic business continue to thrive, and have witnessed 114 percent growth in revenue in the last three years. Most recently, in Arizona, when a divisive anti-immigrant law passed, the state experienced a significant loss in tax revenue. This shows that government policy is extremely important in contributing to the success of our communities, and that we must all remain politically conscious."
Also honored were Marlene Cintron, President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Council; New York State Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera; Manny García, Director of Latino Affairs for the New York Yankees; and Assistant Chief Carlos Gómez, Commanding Officer of the Patrol Borough Bronx.
