Senator José M. Serrano today attended Bronx Pride 2011 in Crotona Park. The event was organized by the Bronx Community Pride Center, which provides much-needed services and programming for LGBT individuals in the borough of the Bronx. The Senator presented a Proclamation to the organization’s executive Director, Dirk McCall, a long-time community leader.
“Bronx Pride has had a huge positive impact, not only on the LGBT community, but on the Bronx as a whole,” said Senator Serrano. “By encouraging acceptance, diversity and civil rights advocacy, it has become an exemplary organization that provides a strong support network for many of our friends, family members, and neighbors. Under Dirk McCall’s leadership, we have seen the Bronx Community Pride Center grow by placing a strong focus on community engagement. I’m delighted that we are able to honor him today for his wonderful work and advocacy for LGBT youth in the Bronx."
This year’s event also celebrated the recent passage of Marriage Equality, which permits all couples in New York State to be married. As a Marriage Equality advocate, Senator Serrano voted yes on the measure, and is hopeful that other states will follow New York’s lead in granting civil rights for all.
