Senator José M. Serrano and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), along with other community leaders and elected officials, co-sponsored an open house at East Harlem's La Marqueta.
The open-house gave members of the community a chance to sample the newest additions to the market, as well as an opportunity to take a tour of Hot Bread Kitchen, a commercial kitchen space dedicated to train women for baking commercially. Hot Bread Kitchen also contains an incubator kitchen, designed for those who are in need of a commercially licensed area to cook their goods for an affordable price.
"La Marqueta is remembered fondly by many long-time residents of East Harlem," said Senator Serrano. "We're looking forward to restoring this marketplace to its former glory, as it will not only serve to foster a sense of community in El Barrio, but it will also begin to address the lack of healthy and affordable food in the neighborhood, as well as create jobs and spur grassroots development."
La Marqueta is located on 1590 Park Avenue (at 115th Street).
