Senator José M. Serrano today joined government colleagues and gay rights advocates on the steps of the Bronx Courthouse, to urge lawmakers to vote in favor of a Marriage Equality bill.
"It's a travesty that in this day and age there are people among us who don't have the same rights as others," said Senator Serrano. "Marriage Equality is one of the most critical civil rights issues of our time, and we must not back down until we have equal rights for all the people of New York State"
The press conference was organized by Brida Bronx Rainbow Independent Democratic Association, Bronx Marriage Equality Now, the Bronx Community Pride Center, and Bronx District Leader Kenny Agosto.
Serrano voted in favor of a marriage equality bill in 2009, and expressed his disappointment when it was voted down. "There have always been some on the wrong side of history who believed that expanding freedom and liberty would somehow be detrimental to our society - they were always wrong," said the Senator. "Expanding civil rights to all will serve to make our society more whole and complete."
