Serrano Ranked Most Environmentally Friendly Senate Member

(Albany, NY) State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) was the most environmentally conscious member of the New York State Senate in 2011.  According to the EPL/Environmental Advocates preliminary scorecard, which tracks legislators’ votes on bills affecting New York’s environment, Senator Serrano had a perfect score of 67 out of 67.

“I'm glad to have the opportunity to have a positive impact on New York’s environmental decisions, and I thank EPL/Environmental Advocates for honoring my commitment to improving our state’s air, land, water and public health,” said Senator Serrano, who has been a longtime advocate for environmental issues in Albany.

The Senate’s average score is currently 32. The highest score is 67 and the lowest is 13. The Rankings were based on legislators’ support for bills that would preserve and improve New York’s environment, and their opposition to legislation with potentially harmful consequences.

“I represent a district that, due to various environmental factors, has some of the highest asthma rates in the country," concluded the Senator. "We must address these issues head on, which is why I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of significant environmental legislation that would improve quality of life for countless New Yorkers.”
