Street Renaming: Philip Reed Way
José M. Serrano
September 10, 2011
The East Harlem community honored Councilmember Philip Reed by naming the intersection of First Avenue and 111th Street “Philip Reed Way.”
Philip Reed was a member of the New York City Council from 1998 to 2005, where he represented District 8, which encompasses East Harlem, portions of the South Bronx, and Central Park. He was the first openly gay African American Council Member.
“It is an honor to witness this momentous occasion and to pay tribute to a local leader who truly loved serving his community, and who worked diligently to ensure underserved neighborhoods received their fair share. Not only was he a remarkable elected official, he was also a wonderful friend. Through this intersection, future generations will always be reminded of all that he accomplished in this community."
