Some 50 employers will be accepting résumés and talking to job seekers at a September 22 job fair sponsored by State Senator Jose R. Peralta and Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities, Inc.
The fair will be held at the Elmcor Recreation Center, located at 107-20 Northern Blvd. in Corona, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Some of the employers that will be on hand include the Council for Airport Opportunities, AFLAC, Macy’s, PSCH Inc., the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and a variety of city and state agencies, as well as several unions with apprenticeship opportunities available.
In addition, Senator Peralta and Elmcor are sponsoring free workshops covering résumé development and job interview skills. These will be held on Wednesdays preceding the job fair, on September 7 and September 14, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Registration for the workshops, which will also be held at the Elmcor Recreation Center, can be done over the phone, by calling (718) 651-0096, extension 260 or 261.
“There is not a more important issue than the state of the economy and the large number of unemployed and underemployed, particularly in minority communities,” Senator Peralta said. “There are longer-term economic development projects that I’m working on that will help create jobs in Central Queens, but there are just too many people who literally cannot afford to wait for things to get better. They need a job now, not next year.”
“In these difficult times, our goal is to support families,” Victoria Williams, the executive director of Elmcor, said. She noted that Elmcor offers job training opportunities through the State University of New York Attain Computer Lab program and employment referrals through Elmcor’s Carreer Pathways initiative, in addition to other support services, including food pantries and afterschool programs.
For more information about the job fair and workshops, call Senator Peralta’s office, at (718) 205-3881.
