LaValle: Senate Passes Bill to Convey Former Armory Site to Town of Riverhead.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today said the Senate has passed his bill (S-4404) that transfers  5.7 acres of the former New York State Armory to the Town of Riverhead. The bill was passed on June 13. “Riverhead Town’s repurposing of the armory site will enable the Town of Riverhead Police Department and Justice Court to be relocated,” LaValle said “and with it the ability to better serve and protect the public and administer justice.”

 LaValle explained that according to town officials, the Police Department and Justice Court are located in the same building and compete for the limited space necessary to provide services to the members of the public. The Police Department does not have adequate space for  equipment, storage or staff, including dispatch personnel responsible for all emergency response within the Town of Riverhead. The Justice court does not have adequate space to accommodate necessary court personnel or proper facilities to transact court business. Due to the limited space, together with inadequate parking around the Police Department and Justice Court, the Police Department is required to store equipment and emergency police vehicles at various locations within the Town.

The bill will now be sent to the Assembly.
