The New York State Senate is scheduled today to adopt resolutions acknowledging the championship seasons of three Suffolk basketball teams -- Port Jefferson, Center Moriches and Mattituck -- for each team’s respective outstanding accomplishments and championship season according to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson), the sponsor of the resolutions. The regularly scheduled Senate session begins at 3 PM. The reading and adoption of resolutions is webcast at: http://www.livestream.com/nysenate.
“These champions – team members and coaches – demonstrate a superior commitment and dedication to their schools, teams and communities,” LaValle said, “and now their accomplishments will be a permanent part of the history and record of the Senate and New York State.”
The Port Jefferson Royals won the 2011 Suffolk County Class C Championship and advanced to the Class C - D game and defeated the Ross School 69-46. The Royals then played in the Class C - B game and defeated Mattituck 49-34. The Royals also competed in both the small school and Long Island Class C Championships.
The Center Moriches girls basketball team is the Long Island Class B Champion. The Lady Devils defeated Cold Spring Harbor 45-31 and Wyandanch to win the Class B Championship, followed by a win over John Glen High School for the Suffolk Small School Championship. The Lady Devils also beat Deer Park for the overall Suffolk Championship title.
The Mattituck Boys Basketball Team are the Long Island Class B Champions. The Tuckers defeated Malverne at the buzzer by a score of 68-67.
