Senator Parker Invites Community Residents to Attend Free Summer Events
For Immediate Release: June 17, 2011
(Brooklyn, NY) To help improve the quality of life for his Brooklyn residents, Senator Kevin Parker will be hosting his annual “mobile-series” of free community events at his district office every Friday starting June 24 thru August 5, 2011.
The summer long series kicks off with U.S. Passport Application Processing Day on Friday, June 24 where representatives of the U.S. Department of State will be on-site to provide assistance with preparing and filing U.S. Passport applications.
July 8th is Family Safety Day with the Fire Department of New York teaching residents important home safety drills. The New York Life Insurance Company will be on hand to inform residents on the Child ID Safety and Protection Program to better protect their children. Representatives from the American Red Cross, the New York State Crime Victims Board, and State Farm insurance will also be in attendance to provide services and tips on how to keep your family safe.
Friday, July 15 is Senior Services Day where the Metropolitan Transit Authority will be providing seniors with discounted metro cards. The Social Security Administration will be available to discuss disability and retirement benefits and the NYC Department of Finance will introduce seniors to the city’s Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption Program.
Social Services Day is July 22 with the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services explaining the procedures for taking civil service examinations and the New York State Comptroller’s Office of “Unclaimed Funds” will be directing residents on how to claim funds currently owed to them by the State.
The month of July ends with Check Your Health Day on Friday, July 29th with the American Italian Cancer Foundation performing free on-site breast screenings and the American Mobile Dental unit offering free on-site dental examinations. Kings County Hospital will also be conducting Preventative Maintenance Health Screenings to ensure that community residents are aware of the best practices in preventative medicine.
Culminating the summer-long series of events is Go Green, Let’s Conserve Day on Friday, August 5, with Con Edison, The New York Power Authority, and the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) helping residents to be more energy efficient through various government programs. Homeowners and renters will be introduced to free and subsidized programs aimed at providing cost-savings to participants while reducing their energy consumption.
“For some people, the struggle is not finding where to get the help, but it’s actually getting to the help. By bringing these services to the 21st district, it alleviates the cumbersomeness of traveling and waiting in long lines at many of these provider offices,” said Senator Parker (D-Brooklyn).
All events are free and will be held at Senator Parker’s district office at 1300 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. For additional information contact Mynah Gooden at the district office at 718-629-6401.
