Statement From New York State Senator Malcolm A. Smith
“Ten years ago today thousands lost their lives after our country witnessed a horrific terrorist attack. We honor the first responders whose lives were taken far before their time and those brave individuals of the NYPD, FDNY and Port Authority who in service to their nation gave the last full measure of devotion.
I know that this day is particularly hard for my constituents in the Rockaway’s who saw the demise of more of New York’s Bravest than anywhere else in the state. They will never be forgotten.
We also pay tribute to the brave men and women of our armed services who have chosen to put themselves in harm's way to protect our country.
Although nothing can ease the pain of such an unbearable tragedy, we must maintain the courage to carry on and the strength to survive.”
