(St. Albans, NY)-Senator Malcolm A. Smith is calling on General Electric (GE) to bring more jobs to New York. GE recently signed a letter of intent with China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation Limited (CSR) to manufacture high- and medium-speed electric multiple unit trains in the United States.
“As a proponent of High Speed Rail (HSR), I urge GE to build the locomotive plant here in New York. The new business generated by HSR could support up to 3,500 jobs in the United States. This agreement would also allow GE to manufacture locomotives for China and provide components for an additional 500 or more jobs. The letter of intent will support efforts to capture new business opportunities valued at up to $1.4 billion with an estimated $360 million in U.S. export content, supporting up to 200 GE Transportation jobs," said Senator Smith.
“I was honored to witness the signing of the letter of intent by the The Chinese Ministry of Rail and GE while attending the 7th World Congress on High Speed Rail in Beijing. There are many favorable incentives available here in New York to make the project economically viable,” added Senator Smith.
I would also like to congratulate the Chairman and CEO of GE Mr. Jeffrey Immelt on his appointment by President Obama as Chairman of the President’s Council on Job and Competitiveness. This is a great honor and he should be extremely proud,” Concluded Senator Smith.
