Senator Golden Names U.s. Marine Corporal George Broadhead to State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn), a member of the State Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Military and Veteran Affairs, this week named Corporal George Broadhead of the United States Marines to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.

Corporal Broadhead, of Gerritsen Beach, served during the Korean War. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Naval Unit Citation, and campaign awards.

Senator Golden stated, “It was a distinct honor to welcome a local hero, George Broadhead, to our State Capitol this week so to recognize him for his service to our Nation. Throughout his career in the United States military, and now as a community activist, George continues to impress his friends, family and neighbors. I have honored him so to showcase him as a hero of Brooklyn, as a hero of New York and as an American hero.”

Golden continued, “It is only because of the service of citizens such as George Broadhead that we are able to live in freedom.”

BIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE R. BROADHEAD

George R. Broadhead was born in Brooklyn in 1932. He and his family moved to Gerritsen Beach, from Park Slope, when he was six. In 1951, George enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. As a Corporal, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his gallantry in action, as well as a Purple Heart Medal and additional awards. Retired on disability from the military, he re-started his college studies at St. John’s University in Brooklyn in 1956. As a student, he also worked at Macy’s in their advertising department for 4 years. In 1960, he began in earnest a lifetime in publishing, starting as a newsletter editor for The McGraw-Hill Publishing Company in New York. From there he became a copywriter at Bear Advertising, which led to a move to the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He returned to New York, and moved into advertising sales with Billboard Magazine Publications. He was promoted to Southern Manager in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1973, George married and moved to Fairfield, Connecticut and started a family. At the time he was Director of Sales and Marketing for NY State Food Merchants Association, before joining Newhouse Newspapers in New York in 1984. In 1989 he was promoted to West Coast Manager for Newhouse Newspapers, in Beverly Hills, California. In 1999, George retired from Newhouse Newspapers and returned to Gerritsen Beach. A lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the VFW, he was Post Commander of VFW Post 107 from 2005 until 2008, and Kings County Commander for two terms in 2007 and 2008. Currently George is President of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association, Inc.
