Senator Dilan to Host Gun Buy Back Program with Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes

The New York Police Foundation creates scholarship fund to assist Officer Figoski’s four daughters achieve their college dreams

Brooklyn—State Senator Martin Malave Dilan (D-Bushwick) is hosting a Gun Buy Back Program with Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, Assemblyman Rafael Espinal and City Councilman Erik Dilan on Saturday December 17, 2011 in Cypress Hills.

The event, being held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 105 Highland Place in Cypress Hills from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, offers the opportunity for individuals to turn in any type of gun for cash.  Individuals turning in handguns in operable condition will receive a $200 bank card and those turning in operable rifles or shotguns will receive a $20 bank card.  Participants are encouraged to turn in as many guns as they like, however payment will only be offered for the first three. 

“Unfortunately, the tragedy that took the life of Police Officer Peter Figoski underscores the importance of removing as many guns as possible from our streets.  I am proud to be able to bring this successful program to Cypress Hills and work alongside District Attorney Hynes, and the NYPD to help make our community safer,” Senator Dilan said.

In the early morning hours of Monday, December 12, 2011 during a burglary, NYPD Officer Peter Figoski and his partner were called to 25 Pine Street in Cypress Hills where they were confronted with two men looking desperately for a way out.  One of the men shot and killed Officer Figoski – a 22 year decorated veteran of the force who is also the father of four daughters. 

“Officer Figoski is truly one of New York’s finest – his life was tragically cut short by a senseless act of violence.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends – especially his four daughters who have just lost their father.  I am committed to doing all I can to help make our neighborhoods safer.  By removing as many guns from our streets as possible through this Gun Buy Back Program, we are taking a great step in the right direction,” Senator Dilan concluded.

In response to this senseless act, the New York City Police Foundation and the New York Post have joined forces to create a scholarship fund that will raise money for the higher education of Officer Figoski’s four daughters.

“With two daughters currently enrolled in college and two nearing the end of high school, this scholarship fund will go a long way to help the Figoski family deal with the tragic loss of their father.  Peter Figoski was an exemplary cop and neither he or his family deserved this.  Please consider donating to help his daughters realize their dreams,” Senator Dilan said.
