Report shows that MTA is not doing enough to prevent or alert riders of subway service disruptions
Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris applauded State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and City Comptroller John Liu as they released a joint audit that takes the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to task for leaving subway riders in the dark about wasteful and unproductive service diversions. According to the audit, subway service diversions are increasing and over budget with little explanation or instruction to riders.
Senator Gianaris on Sunday joined the Comptrollers at a press conference at Queensborough Plaza in Long Island City to announce the audit’s results.
“This audit confirms that excessive and inefficient service disruptions are a matter of fact,” Senator Gianaris said. “The MTA must make greater efforts to compensate communities for the seemingly endless number of disruptions – shuttle buses based on six-year old data are insufficient. I applaud Comptroller DiNapoli and Comptroller Liu for taking charge of this problem and look forward to working to make subway travel a better experience.”
Senator Gianaris has been an advocate for commuters who utilize the subways every day. He has worked hard to improve conditions on the 7 train in particular, which is constantly subject to service disruptions and for which the MTA does not provide commuters with adequate notification of service changes.
