State Sales Tax Waiver On Some Purchases Will Help Save Families Money
State Sen. Patty Ritchie today reminded families that, beginning April 1, Albany is rolling back its sales tax increase on clothing and shoes, giving families and consumers a break on purchases under $55.
“In the current economic climate, families have to save money wherever they can,” Senator Ritchie said. “That’s why I am pleased that Albany will roll back the sales tax to provide savings to families for these small clothing purchases starting April 1.”
The sales tax on clothing was one of more than 100 tax hikes imposed in the past two years, as Albany boosted spending despite the raging national recession that’s cost the state jobs, and contributed to massive budget gaps. The increase cost taxpayers over $600 million.
The new state budget that’s expected to be passed over the next few days did not extend the sales tax increase.
“Over the past year as I traveled across Central and Northern New York, I told families I would work to insure that the state fulfilled its promise to restore this vital exemption,” Senator Ritchie said. "I am glad to see that on April 1 New York will be offering this tax break to hard working families.”
Beginning next year, on April 1, 2012, the value of the state sales tax break will double, reverting to its previous level exempting purchases of $110.
