Senator DÍaz Calls on Governor Cuomo to Support Bill Banning Legislators’ Outside Income

SENATOR DÍAZ CALLS ON GOVERNOR CUOMO TO SUPPORT BILL
BANNING LEGISLATORS’ OUTSIDE INCOME

Albany, New York – State Senator Rubén Díaz (D-Bronx) today called on Governor Cuomo to support a bill that he has reintroduced that would ban legislators from engaging in any outside paid activity during the legislators’ term of office (S.284).

“This bill is primarily about transparency, accountability and openness,” stated Senator Díaz.  “I realize that several proposals have been discussed to require legislators to report outside income.  However, by allowing legislators to continue to receive outside income, there is no doubt in my mind that the problems, of which we are all aware, will not be resolved,” he continued.

Senate Bill 284 very simply states that members are “prohibited from engaging in outside activity for remuneration while in office. No member of the legislature, either senate or assembly, shall engage in any outside activity for remuneration of any kind during his or her term of office”.

“I call on Governor Cuomo, who has made cleaning up Albany his primary campaign theme, to support my legislation. Let’s attack the problem once and for all by banning legislators from engaging in outside paid activity during their term of office. The people of the State of New York deserve nothing less,” remarked Senator Díaz.
