New York State Senator Reverend Diaz (D-Bronx) released the following statement today in response to reports of five active members and three retired members of the New York City Police Department who were arrested for smuggling illegal guns and counterfeit goods:
“Like many New Yorkers, I appreciate the efforts of NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the majority of the hard-working, dedicated and honest members of New York City’s Police Department. However, guns have been a total menace in our society taking the lives of taxi drivers, bodegueros, our children and youth and innocent bystanders. To hear that members of the NYPD are involved in the trafficking of fire arms that might end up in the hands of criminals and increase the rate of crime in this city is something that no one should tolerate. It is a shame that these corrupt police officers have betrayed their oath.”
